The Gilroy Portuguese community, like Portuguese communities all over the world, celebrates the Feast of the Holy Spirit every year in May. This is a religious celebration consisting of a parade through downtown Gilroy, a mass at St Mary’s Catholic Church, and a lunch at the Portuguese Hall on 7th Street, just East of the railroad tracks.
The RRDG post for the 2013 Festa do Espirito Santo parade and celebration gets a lot of activity on the web – it is one of the most popular pages on this site. You can read a more detailed explanation of the traditions of the celebration in the 2013 post by clicking here.
We were able to attend the parade again in 2015, and we have pictures of just about all the participating communities – their banners and their Queens. There are a lot of pictures, so they are presented in thumbnail form. Click on the thumbnails to see a larger version of the pictures.
If you are interested in the Portuguese culture in California and around the world, there is an annual Dia de Portugal celebration in Kelly Park, the second Saturday in June. The celebration includes food, music, dancing, literature and historical exhibits. Portuguese communities from around the world participate.
